Journey Into Advent at Community UCC
kicks off with a fine arts collaborative entitled
“While It Was Yet Dark,”
Join us for one special evening as we consider the gifts of the dark during the darkest time of the calendar year — the Winter Solstice. By finding ways to live extravagantly, While It Was Yet Dark, we’ll be more prepared to face the light.
Our guests are:
- Julia Penner-Zook, local theologian and poet has worked in ministry and social services in Canada, the U.S. and Europe for over 30 years. She has an M.A. in theology and works in areas of grief and loss, and professional and personal coaching. Julia’s prophetic poetry focuses on issues of social justice and spiritual wholeness. The desert, the darkness and the divine provide the foundation for this weekend’s focus.
- Jenny Regehr, a Canadian pianist, well-known for her solo recitals, duo and chamber music performances and Lieder collaborations. Jenny was a senior piano instructor at the Glenn Gould School of the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto for 15 years, and she continues to teach master classes and adjudicate competitions and festivals in Canada and overseas. Jenny will perform works by Schubert, Bartok, Brahms, Prokofiev and others.
- Stacey L. Rhoades, an award-winning photographer who traveled to all 50 states, photographing 36 National Parks in 2016, is also a licensed clinical professional counselor. She has worked with active-duty military members and their families in the U.S. and overseas for the past 12 years. Stacey says she feels most at home behind her camera, which is evident in her stunning landscape photography.
These artists will treat us to a night of wonder, reflection, and new insight about the dark as they move seamlessly between their respective mediums.
Cost: $25. Childcare is provided (included). Refreshments follow.
Friday, Nov. 22, is the opening event for a weekend to consider this theme. If you wish to join us Saturday morning as well, please let us know.
